Worksheet 2

Ozone in the stratosphere: Formation, distribution and absorption

In the stratosphere ozone is formed and decomposed in the so-called "Chapman-cycle". The reactions in the box beside take place:

T 1

Hatch the area of wavelengths in Figure 1a where ozone can be formed from oxygen.

T 2

Hatch the area of wavelengths in Figure 1a where ozone is nearly the only UV filter.

T 3

Where in Figure 1b is the highest partial pressure of ozone p(O3) to be found? Mark this area in Figure 1b. By which factor is p(O3) higher at this height than close to the ground?

T 4

What is the approximate thickness of the layer of air where p(O3) is greater than close to the ground? Hatch this area in Figure 1b.

T 5

How can you explain Figure 1b using Figure 1a?
