Basics

      1.  Ozone:
the Chapman-cycle

Worksheet 1

In the stratosphere ozone is always formed and destroyed. The english mathematician and geophycisist Sidney Chapman investigated and described this cycle. Because of that this cycle is named "Chapman-cycle".

The flash animation below demonstrates the Chapman-cycle and all the important steps of it.

Symbols:

oxygen atom

 oxygen molecule
 ozone
photons  of high but different energy (UV-light)
heavy weight particles of different temperature

Add the missing words in the text. The missing words are:

ozone molecule ; ozone molecules; cracking of ozone; oxygen atom ; oxygen atom; oxygen atoms; oxygen atoms; oxygen molecule ; oxygen molecule; oxygen molecule; oxygen molecules; UV-light ; UV-light; warmth; warmth; wavelength

  1.  High-energy (short wave) UV-light can crack ________________________ into ________________________.

  2.  By a "triple collision", if a ________________________, a ________________________ and a heavy wight particle impact, a ________________________ is formed. the heavy wight particle can be a dust particle, or another big gas molecule.

  3.  The heavy wight particle has the task, to take over the ________________________ ,which becomes free during the ozone formation. It delivers the ________________________slowly to the environment afterwards.

  4.  ________________________ can be cracked likewise by ________________________. The ________________________needed by this does not need to have as much energy than to crack oxygen molecules. The ________________________may be larger. The products of this ________________________are an ________________________and an_______________________.

  5.  Do two ________________________impact, a ________________________is formed.
