About the ozone layer
and the ozone hole 2005

For younger children

 UNEP - Ozone day website
There is an International Day for the preservation of the ozone layer. The United Nations offer on their ozone website of this day also a lot for children. For example you find here a link to the Ozzy Ozone film as well as a comic about Ozzy is available in several languages. And here you get access to:

 UNEP's ozone kids corner

 Ozone Action Education Pack (UNEP)
Newer summary page of the UNEP resources on stratospheric ozone for education.

 SunWise Pages
The sun can become dangerous for us. The thinning of the ozone layer made this danger more severe. On the sun wise pages you can learn about it and try out in little animations and interactive tasks what you can do.

On the trail of the missing ozone
A journalist is sent to find out more about the missing ozone. Read what happened to him! (US E.P.A.)

 Ozone hole watch
NASA shows us during the ozone hole period a 3-dimensional visualisation of the ozone hole. When you observe the hole from one day to the next, you will see, that it is rotating. This is because there is relatively uniform wind going round the pole. We call this the "polar vortex".

For teachers, parents and secondary school

 ESPERE Informative texts and worksheets
For the age group 14 - 19 you will find some material for reading and worksheets on the ESPERE websites "Upper atmosphere" Unit 2, in the Basics level and also in the More level. Ozone chemistry is introduced, but also the important differences are explained, why ozone near the ground is harmful and in the stratosphere important. And another big misunderstanding: the ozone hole and the greenhouse effect are not directly related.

 The ozone hole website
On this simple but regularly updated website you find the basic facts about ozone and the ozone hole with a collection of useful illustrations.

 Ozone hole tour
The 'Ozone hole tour' website of Cambridge University is a bit older but give you the basic introduction to the problem, telling also the history of the ozone hole discovery.

 Frequently asked questions
You will find detailed, but mainly text based explanations, in the FAQ section on ozone (UNEP)
