The climate topic in 12 units

A preface for teachers
and all readers interested in environmental education

The importance of an understanding of our natural and human-changed environment and processes in the "Earth System" is growing not only in the political and public domains but also in the lesson plans of all nations, in keeping with the overall increasing relevance of the problem.

A comprehensive understanding of climatic processes and their interconnections cannot usually be achieved by smaller supplements which are added here and there in science and geography classes. But in optional subjects as well as in project work it is sometimes also possible and in any case reasonable, to teach the climate topic en bloc. However, often there is a lack of material as well as concepts. The series "climate change classes" would like to help to close this gap in four editions of the ACCENT global change magazine.

A concept for 12 double lessons

We offer four blocks of three topics each in a teaching concept plus material, which condenses the main issues of climate science for 12 double lessons. Using the established Global Change Magazine icons, this concept includes ...

brief informative texts as an introduction for students

Research

background information for teachers, usually referring to the recent world climate report

Activities

ideas and instructions for experiments

link lists to further material

The topics are related to key issues of climate change. They also refer to the established contents in science and geography teaching (e.g. weather, photosynthesis or acid rain) but not in detail. Instead, we try to provide support for the teacher in particular focussing on uncertainties and on controversially discussed topics.
