Download material

In contrast to the other editions of the ACCENT Global Change Magazine this edition has not been translated into other languages. You will find downloadable versions in the material corner, but in English only.

Intention

With this edition we address English courses at middle or high school level (or comparable levels in other school systems). We try in particular to make the world of international conferences and meetings and the special problems arising on the way to international treaties understandable. As an example we use the climate summit in Montreal in November 2005.

Although the language level is slightly adopted to English classes the context is not. For this edition the real topics and discussions of the Montreal climate summit have been translated into an understandable language and have been illustrated with examples. The students will remember the content from the lessons while watching news and reading papers. They experience English as a global language which allows communication among the countries of the United Nations. The context of the global climate problem strengthens on the one hand the feeling of living in one world. On the other hand it is an ideal topic for looking into the future and for presenting plans. That is why the activities concern the future tense (will / to be going to).

Suggestions

The introductory text (Research) is a relatively high level and includes some special terms which could be offered as vocabulary before.

You may offer to the students also the glossary page in the “context” part in order to avoid misunderstandings with technical terms.
In the activities there are tasks and worksheets related to the introductory texts in order to train the usage of forms of the future tense.
