Questions about the film

(If you have not yet seen the film, please see it first. Otherwise you cannot answer the questions.)

You can also download the questions as MS Word or PDF file (350 KB).

And you can download the dialogue of the film as text in MS Word or PDF (60 KB).

ozzyspeaksLeft

Hello ...

I hope you liked the little film about me and my friends ... and also about those we have to fight and protect against together. Did you listen well during the film? If yes, I am sure you can answer to some questions. In order to see the answer, just move with the mouse over the invisible text part. It is written in white.

ozzyspeaksRight

But first I would like to introduce two people you saw in the film ...

Ben

The little boy is Ben ...

< Ben

Mr. Care
less >

Mr. Careless

... and he is Mr. Careless.  We certainly hope he learned a lot now.

But now the questions. Always when there are three dots ... you have to give an answer.

Who is this?

Here is somebody I did not introduce. It is an albatross, a big bird living next to the sea. Do you remember her name?

I am sure you do. Her name is ...   Alberta .

sun

Hui! Here we have a view into the space. This ball sending light and heat to the Earth, is the sun. But what is the sun made of? Is it just water and land like our planet Earth?

Nooooo. It consists of  ...hot gases . And for more than four billion years it has kept our planet alive.

UV

But not all light the sun sends to us is good for life. There are also dangers. Look at these guys here. They can do harm to our skin, our eyes and also to plants. We call them ... ultraviolet rays (or UV).

Ozone defense

But fortunately we are protected by strong defenders, the ozone molecules. They form the ... ozone layer. They let the warm rays of the sunlight in and block the ... ultraviolet rays.

danger from the Earth

But there are chemicals coming up from the Earth, which were for example used in air conditioners, fridges and spray cans. These chemicals are called ... chlorofluorocarbons or for short ... CFCs .

harm to the defense layer

These chemicals, which are harmless for humans, are very dangerous for the ozone molecules. They cause chemical processes in the air, which destroy ozone molecules and make the defense layer thinner. In the end something happens which you can see here. An .... ozone hole forms.

This was really a disaster for our Earth. We go back down from the upper atmosphere to our towns and villages and try to understand what the consequences are.
We learned that most humans understood their mistakes and replaced these very dangerous compounds. They are not reactive near the ground but destructive for the ozone layer, because they contain atoms of the chemical elements chlorine and bromine. Unfortunately there are still exceptions.

Ozzy explains

Methylbromide

But what is happening here? Somebody is still using the dangerous chemical agent methylbromide. It is used in ... pesticides which kill weeds on the field. But there are better alternatives that do not destroy the ozone layer.

old refridgerator

Look at Mr. Careless. What is he doing? He is compressing old machines and refrigerators for waste. Why is this a problem even though new refrigerators do not contain CFCs anymore?

CFC from old redridgerator

It is a problem, because ... there are still many households, which have an old refridgerator. It is not a problem, as long as it is in use. But if you buy a new one, you cannot just give the old one to a normal landfill. Experts have to remove the dangerous CFCs before it is scrapped. Mr. Careless did not do this ... and you see what happens.

attack of UV rays

Mr. Careless got his punishment. He was attacked by the ... ultraviolet rays and got very bad ... sunburn. Unfortuately this can happen also to other people who did not harm the environment. Perhaps you already had this experience yourself.

danger for children

Too much UV light can damage in particular for young children the self-protecting system of the body, which is called ... immune system. This can cause cancer later on.

bad for eyes

The rays are also bad for our eyes. They can cause a common eye disease. You remember the name? It is ... eye cataract.

fire extinguisher

Mr. Careless makes it even worse. He uses and old fire extinguisher that contains ... halons. Since these chemicals also damage the ozone layer, such fire extinguishers are forbidden now in many countries, for example in the whole European Union, and should not be used anywhere.

Ben was really a bit shocked by all this news. But we are not helpless. Do you still remember what we can do?

Ozzy

Tree shade

We saw that Alberta, Ben and Ozzy escaped under a tree and could not be reached by the UV warriors. So if you were to give a recommendation to somebody, where to stay, what would you say? ...

"STAY IN THE SHADE!"

clothes

You certainly cannot always stay under trees. But if you go out into the sun, protect your skin by ... covering your arms and legs. And for your head, wear a ... hat or cap.

protect yourself

For the protection of your eyes you can use ... sun glasses. And for the rest of your skin not covered, use ... sunscreen.

telling and learning

Ben learned from Ozzy. You learned from the story of Ozzy and Ben. You can tell others and they will learn from you. You can tell for example your ... friends, parents and relatives.

Stop others

And you can stop others doing harm to our environment. Not only to the ozone layer. We try our best now to save it. But just see the exhaust gases of the tractor. There are also other problems like global warming. Using too much energy in cars and households makes this worse. Ask your parents and teacher also about this.

I have to go back to my place in the ozone layer now. Unfortunately, even though we do not release harmful chemicals anymore, it will take a very long time until the ozone layer has fully recovered. Do you know how long? It will take at least .... 50 years.
