Climate in cities

Basics

Unit 1:
Air pollution due to human activity

Anthropogenic air pollution is a serious problem in urban areas. It modifies urban climate and deteriorates natural environment, economy and human health. The high concentration of industry and transportation causes large input of air pollution to urban atmosphere. Smog occurrence and high fallout of dust and soot are characteristic effects of that pollution.

Industrial catastrophies and cases of malfunction of the industrial infrastructure can cause sudden delivery of huge amounts of air pollution, leading to permanent degradation of the natural environment. They are also very dangerous for human health. Air pollution is an international problem, like in the so-called "Black Triangle", located at the junction of the borders of Germany, Poland and Czech Republic, where huge brown coal resources are exploited.
