Unit 1:
Air pollution due to human activity

Industry is concentrated in cities, so is energy production and transportation. Those branches of economy are main sources of air pollution, as they deliver various gases, particles and dust to the atmosphere. Each branch of industry delivers different air pollution, specific for the particular technological processes, but energy production and transportation are based on burning fossil fuels. The impacts of those economy branches effects' include climate modification, and deterioration of human health and natural environment.

Many attempts have been undertaken to reduce air pollution. At present the sustainable development is widely accepted strategy. Its assumption is that the economic growth can be permanent and well-balanced, so as to satisfy the needs of the society but without degradation of the natural environment. New technologies are introduced to reduce air pollution, and recycling is popularized. Negative effects of air pollution are also limited. In the endangered areas, the systems of air pollution monitoring are introduced. International agreements help to improve the situation, mainly in global scale.
