1. Droughts and flooding more often?

The availability of the resource water

Climate changes alter the amount of precipitation world wide.

In some regions floodings occur, in others, however, deserts spread and drought catastrophes threaten the area.

The production of agricultural food is negatively affected especially in third world countries and therefore the food supply is in danger.

In these areas with less precipitation water becomes a scarce resource.

However, water is indispensable to life!

- Now think about where you need water in everyday life.
- Write down the reason you needed the water for and estimate or measure the amount. So you can find out how much water you need for one day.

The consumption of water is measured by a water meter, so that every household knows exactly how much water was needed and how much they have to pay for.

This statistic shows you the average daily water consumption of 1 person in a German household:

In developing countries of tropical and subtropical regions there is often a huge lack of water. Women have to walk long distances to get water from the well and carry it home. In many cases the water is not clean and contains bacteria causing illnesses.

Water is a very valuable resource. It is even more important than heating oil, the fundament of energy and the fuel for warmth and traffic. Therefore everybody should not spoil it but handle with care.

Write down some suggestions how to reduce the use of water in everyday life.
You can also find various ideas in the internet (see link collection).

At the climate and evironmental conference in Rio de Janeiro / Brasil the 22nd of march was declared as the day of water. This day is supposed to remind everybody of the importance of water.

In Northern Africa and the Arabian peninsula there are so called oases. Oases are flourishing villages in the middle of the desert. Maybe you have already seen an oasis, when travelling as a tourist.

Write down a little essay about it.

Also look in an encyclopedia and find out more about this topic!

Dry periods are the reasons why deserts spread in some areas. Trees and plants dry out. Consequently living space for humans and animals gets lost.

An enormous danger for nature and humans also comes from huge amounts of precipitation in a short time.

Think about flood catastrophes.

Which consequences have floods for people and environment?
