Material:

Download material and the WebQuest are offered in the ACCENT material corner for this edition.

Context and application

Chemistry:

The content of this magazine can be used in the context of equilibrium reactions of sulphur dioxide and sulphur trioxide or in the context of cycles of chemical substances.

- Curricular context sulphur dioxide / sulphur trioxide

a) Cycles of chemical substances in the environment; here: the sulphur cycle - or - technical processes: manufacture of sulphuric acid

b) Analytical techniques for the determination of concentrations, here in particular proton-transfer reactions.

- Curricular context sulphur cycle:

The contents of this magazine are suitable for chemistry lessons on "cycles of substances in nature and the environment" addressing pupils in the age group 14 - 16 years. In this context topics like the pH-value, autoprotolysis of water and equilibrium values can be discussed in classes without the necessity of pretaught information.
Alternatively, the examples given can be used for a deepening of the topics "chemical equilibrium", law of mass action and acid/base reactions in K12 or A-level classes.

Geography:

Furthermore, the research article may also be used in geography lessons in the context of economic development in Asia, throwing a light on the burden for the environment and prevention of environmental damage as an economic cost category.
