Worksheet for work in pairs or groups

We categorise private tourism …

Depending on the size of the class, work in pairs or form groups of three or four people. Each pair or group receives from the teacher 5 – 10 different travel cards. Each of the cards has a number.

Look through all of your travel cards. Before you think over different criteria in the group, sort them first in your personal order of preference and note the numbers of the three travel options you like most.

Factor analysis

On each card you can carry out a factor analysis at the bottom of the card. Six fields are free in order to give marks for the following factors potentially influencing the decision of a tourist to go on a certain trip. For each of the factors give marks from one to five. 1 means that this aspect will not have a positive influence on the decision of the average tourist. 5 means, that this factor has a strong positive influence on the decision.

Now discuss with your partner or in the group. Consider tourists with different interests and in different age groups and agree on a mark for each factor.

mark scale

Factor 1: Costs
Consider the price of the trip. Do you think what you gain for yourself in this trip and what you get in scenery, recreation, education, services and other factors is worth the price?

1 = no, not at all

---->

3 = perhaps

---->

5 = definitely

Factor 2: Development
Many people in the world make a living from tourism. It is important in particular for regions which have nothing else to offer. Do you think you contribute with your trip to the development of a region which has not much else to sell and you give income to people who would be poor without tourism?

1 = no, not at all

---->

3 = perhaps

---->

5 = definitely

Factor 3: Recreation
People often go on holiday in order to recover from work, regain strength and for recreation. Do you think this trip would be useful for your personal recreation?

1 = no, not at all

---->

3 = perhaps

---->

5 = definitely

Factor 4: Health
Many older people or people with health problems go on holiday as well as many people who would like to improve their health. Do you think these people would chose the trip for this reason?

1 = no, not at all

---->

3 = perhaps

---->

5 = definitely

Factor 5: Education
When travelling to another place you can gain experiences and learn for example about languages and culture. Do you think people would choose this trip in order to improve their education?

1 = no, not at all

---->

3 = perhaps

---->

5 = definitely

Factor 6: Environment
Many people are aware that tourism has negative impacts on the environment, through emissions from transport but also for example through changes in the natural landscape. Do you think people would choose this trip because it is environmentally friendly?

1 = no, not at all

---->

3 = perhaps

---->

5 = definitely

Other factors
Are there any other factors which would influence the decision to choose this trip although the marks in other categories are maybe low. Name this factor and note it under “factor analysis” on the card.
